The resultant 4.5–5.0 litre 917 — the largest air-cooled racing car ever — instantly rendered its prototype rivals obsolete. Initially an unwieldy beast, the 917 was tamed for 1970 and quickly mastered its rivals. Over two seasons, it trampled the competition and won race after race, including victories at Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Its speed, exceeding 240mph, was so remarkable that rule-makers eventually banned large-capacity race cars from endurance racing.
