In 1965, the "New 500 F" was released, replacing the "D" model. This version eventually became the most popular variant with the highest production numbers. The main changes were primarily cosmetic; the most notable being the switch to front-hinged doors with 8 screws per door, known as the "eight bolts" version. This design lasted from approximately March to November of 1965, or until the chassis number exceeded one million (making this variant highly sought after due to its limited 10-month production). This alteration was the result of new safety regulations that mandated all models to have front-hinged doors. While Fiat also modified the 500 saloon to comply, the Giardiniera variant maintained the original door configuration throughout its production until 1977, as commercial vehicles were exempt from the new regulations. It is believed that Fiat discontinued the 8-screw hinge design in December of 1965 and switched to the standard 4-screw design.
