The first version produced was the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerita), presented at the Amsterdam Motor Show on 18 February 1965 and produced until 1967, although it remained on the price list until 1969. Aesthetically, the car does not differ much from the Sprint GT from which it was derived but it weighs only 745 kg, a good 200 kg less than the 950 of the standard Sprint GT. The engine, despite the few horsepower gained on the road version, was redesigned to be able to handle the modifications and subsequent increases in power needed to prevail on the track. The 1.6 twin-cam of the Sprint GT was equipped with special connecting rods and pistons and a dual ignition head (two spark plugs per cylinder) with larger valves inclined at an 80° "V"; the intake and exhaust valves went from 35 and 31 mm to 40.5 and 36.5 mm respectively. The fuel supply was entrusted to two larger Weber 45 DCOE double-barrel carburetors (45 mm in diameter instead of 40) and an electric fuel pump. Its competitive debut was in 1965 at the Trento-Bondone hill climb where it won its category, and then went on to win the Coupe des Alpes the same year.
